Photography Beginnings

Photography was not always considered an art. Its integration to art was a process very discussed, and it began with the portrait photographers. The photographic picture had great welcome like a replacement for the painted portrait since this one was much more affordable. As the photographic picture replaced the painted picture, great amount of painters decided to become portrait photographers to survive. This was the case of Felix Tournachon, Gustave Him Gray and the second of the Bisson brothers. This was the first entrance of photography to the artistic world. In addition painters, there were others who fought so that photography wouldn’t be considered an art.

In the middle of the XIX century a new artistic tendency appeared, the naturalism. The appearance of this new tendency, centered in the objectivity, looked to imitate the reality and the nature with a high degree of perfection and despised subjectivity. Thus, naturalism was the open door to give photography a true importance in art; imitating reality almost to perfection surpassed painting widely. On the other hand, the constant development of the photography at that time, based on new techniques using the sun’s light, gave origin to photos with a greater aesthetic meaning.

When knowledge in optics was sufficiently advanced, painters discovered the way to project an image on a film of paper with oil. What allowed them to quickly take notes with the disadvantages of the investment in the picture and the reduced size.

Later, egg white techniques were discovered, that allowed to obtain the image itself recorded in the paper. This technique was perfected thanks to the understanding of the implied chemical phenomenon and the continuous experimentation with alternative materials. Soon it was possible to have a box with photosensitive paper hidden from light, a tube with which to focus it, and a stopper to make the light spend sufficient time so that it made an impression to the film.

The photography like art, science and human experience was evolving in parallel during this time. As soon as it was possible to make of the camera a movable device, easy to handle, appeared the possibility of influencing the spectator by means of the position of the camera and its approach. This allowed transferring the subjectivity of the photographer to the photography, fundament of constructing an artistic language.

Artistic Photo Today

Today, the artistic photography in itself, has a very subjective character. Artistic photography is almost completely subjective and the manipulation of the images using digital tools has become a fundamental technique in its artistic expression.

The photographic artistic language departed from the inheritance of painting. Nevertheless, quickly it extended his lexicon thanks to its facility to extreme approaches (picatos, contrapicatos, etc.), the capture of movement and the acknowledge of moment. The pressure on the photographer to mark its own subjectivity photography forged a full direct language of subtleties.

Today photography is practiced by millions of people everywhere in the world armed with the widest range of cameras. The appearance of digital cameras, cameras with video and virtual reality complicate and enrich the future of this art. Digital photography is today not only a matter of contrast, meaning, light, intention, color, perspective and moment, it has become an art of precise computer-manipulated atmospheres.
